Why is there only one license plate in Quebec?

In most of North America as in most countries of the world, cars display a license plate on the front and back. In addition to 19 American states, we also find in Canada; Quebec, which made this choice for a very specific reason. Besides the language, would French Canadians have wanted to stand out from the rest of the country? Not really, the reason for this specificity is more economic than political. In 1978, the Parti Québécois decided to remove the front plate in order to save money. Since that date, Quebecers only have to attach one plate to the back of their car.

For the record, compulsory car registration was introduced in Quebec in 1906. It was also in 1978 that the slogan "I remember" appeared on Quebec plates. Previously, one could read “La Belle Province”.
