Almost everyone knows this quote from Henry Ford:
"My customers are free to choose the color of their car as long as they want it black."
But other quotes from automotive figures are steeped in history, but let's first continue with other quotes from Henry Ford:
"To have done more for the world than the world has done for you: that is success."
"When I see an Alfa Romeo, I take off my hat."
Enzo Ferrari is also known for his quotes, including:
"The customer is not always right."
"I am only an engine designer."
"To finish first, you must first finish."
"I don't sell cars; I sell engines. The cars I launch for free, since something has to hold the engines." »
Enzo Ferrari was also the subject of quotes, in this case from his greatest "competitor," Ferruccio Lamborghini, who said:
"Ferrari never spoke to me again. He was a great man, I admit, but it was so easy to upset him."
Other of these quotes are directly related to the automobile:
"I had never stopped thinking about the ideal car... All I had to do was build a factory to build it."
"When I miss the noise and the fury, I retreat to my garage and turn the key in the ignition of my Miura."
On the French side, Jean Rédélé, founder of Alpine: "I chose the name Alpine for my company because, for me, this adjective represents the pleasure of driving on mountain roads. It was while crisscrossing the Alps in my 4CV with a 5-speed gearbox that I had the most fun." My customers had to experience this thrilling driving experience behind the wheel of the car I wanted to build. Alpine is a name that sounds good; it's also symbolic."
Louis Renault, founder of Renault, on Citroën's advancement in the French market: "I am very happy to have Monsieur Citroën as a competitor, because he makes people work and forces them to compete."
This quote from Louis Renault, written in 1934, was intended for François Lehideux, the new CEO of Renault and husband of Françoise Renault, the niece of the brand's founder.
It was the direct consequence of a vast investment campaign launched by Citroën at the height of the crisis of the early 1930s. André Citroën had his Quai Javel factories rebuilt to bring them up to par with the American facilities and orchestrated the launch of the Traction Avant at the cost of heavy loans that would soon lead the Parisian manufacturer to bankruptcy.
Across the Rhine, Ferdinand Porsche, founder of Porsche and designer of the first Volkswagen:
"No one has made my dream car, so I had to make it."
"If we don't fail sometimes, it's because we haven't challenged ourselves."
"No one has made my dream car, so I had to make it."
Ettore Bugatti, Man of Genius, declared:
"What has already been invented belongs to the past; only innovations are worthy of interest."
"Nothing is too beautiful, nothing is too expensive."
Colin Chapman (Lotus)
"Light is Right."
"Any car that stays in one piece for more than one race is too heavy." »
When Henry Royce was designing the first Rolls-Royce, a friend suggested that the only way to make his company viable was to "offer a reliable car at an affordable price to appeal to a wide audience."
Henry Royce replied that he had no intention of doing so. His idea was "to make the best car in the world, whatever the cost, and sell it to people who could appreciate a good product and were able to pay."
Among the figures outside the automotive world, the brilliant director Orson Welles, who never missed an opportunity to feature cars in his films, said:
"The trouble with sports cars is that once you can afford one, you can't get in it."
Bernard Pivot: "Love is a double-chevron car that doesn't run on super, but on time. You usually have to fill up with time." »
Agatha Christie: "It all depends on what you ask of life. What matters is whether you want something strongly. So many people make money without having the slightest idea how it's used. They're caught in the machine. They're slaves. They go to their offices early, leave late. They never stop to live. And what do they get? A bigger car, a bigger set of houses, a more extravagant wife or mistress... and more headaches. For most rich people, amassing money is enough. But for what? Do they ever ask themselves this question? They don't know."
Jules Vrne: "Man began by traveling on all fours, then, one fine day, on two feet, then by cart, then by coach, then by carriage, then by coach, then by stagecoach, then by railway; well! The projectile is the car of the future, and, in truth, the planets are only projectiles, simple cannonballs launched by the hand of the Creator."
Anonymous Quotes:
"To drive a Porsche, before the race you have to be a businessman. During the race you have to be Superman. After the race, you have to be a gentleman."
"These days, people go to work to buy a car that they can use to get to work."
"The rear wheel of a car will go where the front wheel went."
"When a man opens a car door for his wife, it's either a new car or a new woman."
"A pedestrian is a gentleman who goes to get his car." »
"When a man takes the trouble to open his car door for a woman, one of two things happens: either it's the woman or it's the car he's recently acquired."
"Anyone who doesn't brake at the sight of a police car is probably already stopped."
"More people die in their beds than on the road. I conclude that it's more dangerous to fall asleep in your bed than at the wheel of your car."
"The automobile. The proletariat's secret weapon to kill millions of capitalists, while supporting millions of workers."
"Certainly, accidents can happen in a relationship, but just because you get a flat tire one day doesn't mean you have to throw away your car."
"We only ask them to love their neighbor as much as they love their car."
