Toyota's first car, the Model AA, was influenced by the Chrysler Airflow

The Toyota A1 is a large sedan, produced in only three units in May 1935. It was the prototype for Toyota's first production car, the AA, which would be launched in September 1936. Its styling was inspired by the Chrysler Airflow.

The Chrysler Airflow was produced between 1934 and 1937. It was the idea of CEO Walter Chrysler to revive his company's sales. He focused on a feature previously specific to racing and test cars, never presented in series production to the general public. He requested the production of a new car with revolutionary aerodynamics. Its aerodynamics revolutionized the aesthetics so much that the public didn't follow. This was a shame, because the Airflow also broke new ground in terms of comfort. Despite its resounding failure, the Chrysler Airflow made a lasting impression and remains today a legendary car, one that inspired the modern streamline without benefiting from it. The Airflow thus demonstrated that beyond its technical aspect, the bodywork had a real commercial vocation.
