Gray card: where does its name come from?

Everyone in Algeria knows what the gray card knows, and yet its color is not gray.

So where does his name come from and why is it called?

Its origin dates back to the 18th century when trains transported coal from mines and had to be checked and approved by a mining inspector. With the advent of automobiles, all rolling stock is subject to this inspection. Moreover, it is this inspector who handed over the license plates, hence the name. In addition, they handed over the vehicle registration card, so called it because the document was gray in color.

Before 1893, it was the mining engineer who gave the authorization to people over 21 years old to be able to drive a vehicle.

Now this function is independent and no longer falls under the mines but we kept the name here while in France the name was changed in 1983.
